Excerpt from article written by Mabel (Fuller) Johnson (daughter of Ida Buchholz and Allen Fuller):
"My father, Allen Ray Fuller, was born in 1880 in Sauk Center, Minnesota. He went to school in Sauk Centre, where his mother died when he was ten years old. He had one brother, Jesse and two sisters, Annie and Hattie. He went to high school in St. Paul, where he finished grade eleven. He worked in St. Paul, running a draying business, until he was twenty-five. In 1905 he came to
Calgary and filed on a homestead south of Carbon. My father and mother were married in 1905 and raised a family of ten children, including my two half-brothers and half-sister. My parents sold their homesteads and bought a section of land seven miles north-east of Carbon. They lived in Carbon until sometime during the first World War and then moved to the farm. Here they lived,
except for an interval of four years in the 1920s which was spent in Calgary, until my mother's death in 1952 and my father's in 1959. My mother had fifty-two grandchildren, of these, thirty-six were my father's descendants. ... We spent the years from 1925 to 1929 in Calgary, in the Manchester and Ogden districts, so that Fred could get through Grade Twelve and Ada could attend Normal School. ... The 1930s were hard years; just as they were for everyone. But my father managed to run a car winter and summer. He had a new Chev car in 1930 and another in 1936. In 1936, we had an enjoyable trip to the Peace River country, to visit Ada and her family and in 1940 we drove the Big Bend highway and up to Squamish to visit Cecilia and her family. My parents were great believers in the Social Credit party. Every Sunday the radio was turned on to hear Aberhart. When the Second World War came along and conditions improved, they were able to build a new house on the farm. Most of the lumber came from the house they had owned in Calgary. My dad sanded and repainted fourteen doors from one house to the other. My mother raised pigs to buy the furniture for her new house. She was able to enjoy it for ten years, until she was killed in a car accident near Beiseker in May, 1952, at the age of seventy-three. My dad lived seven years longer. He was not very well for the last years of his life. He suffered from diabetes and a duodenal ulcer. He died in his sleep in April, 1959."; CW6, page, 1-1-1.
